Why Your Generic Marketing Will Fail When Construction Pipelines Tighten
The latest Office for National Statistics figures paint a troubling picture for the coming months.
Total construction output grew by 0.3% in Q2, with both new work and repair and maintenance increasing slightly and new infrastructure work rising by 1.9%.
But worryingly, new orders fell by 11.8% in Q2 compared with Q1. This is a drop of £1,232 million. The ONS says this was mainly caused by a fall in new private commercial and public sector work.
This means output is holding. New orders are not. The market is likely to become more competitive.
When competition for work intensifies, you need to stand out. And generic marketing won't do that.
You need to have a strong marketing strategy.
Promoting a quality service is not enough
When the market is buoyant, a decent reputation and relationships may be all you need.
However, when the market dips, clients do more due diligence. They check your website. They look at your LinkedIn and search for evidence that you've done work like theirs, recently, successfully, and at the right scale. If they can't find that evidence quickly, they move on.
Construction companies tend to say the same things. They talk about quality. Experience. Reliability. Health and safety. Customer service. Technical expertise. Delivering on time and on budget.
But that doesn't prove you can deliver the results your clients want.
Proof comes from strategic integrated marketing. It's about playing the long game, not going for quick results, which is why you need to start building it now, not when your pipeline dries up.
What is a strategic, integrated marketing strategy?
A strategic marketing strategy isn't one campaign, a single post, or a case study. It's about consistent messaging across the channels your target clients use, with each touchpoint reinforcing your brand, building confidence, and proving you can deliver.
That means you want a website that clearly explains who you work with, what you do, the sectors you understand and the problems you help solve. A website with clear information, a focus on client benefits, case studies and thought leadership, and relevant accreditations gives clients confidence in your capabilities.
But no matter how good your website is, you can't expect it to do all the work. Effective marketing combines different elements.
Case studies provide the proof behind your claims. These are among the most underused tools in construction marketing, as they show real examples of the challenge or problem a client faced, your approach, the solution, and the outcome.
Targeted e-shots are ideal for sharing useful advice, project updates, sector insights, case studies, or to nurture prospects.
Whether you like it or not, your target clients are on LinkedIn. Regular company news, project updates, and thought leadership articles help you keep in front of key decision-makers and start conversations.
Nothing beats direct conversations, and that's where telemarketing comes in. It helps identify opportunities, speak directly to decision-makers, warm up contacts, follow up on campaigns and answer objections. At CME, we continue to secure projects for our clients with our bespoke telemarketing campaigns. Our experienced team understands the construction industry inside out, and we’d be happy to talk about how we can help you open doors and start conversations with new prospects.
Don't wait until it's too late
As we said at the beginning of this blog, the ONS reports that new construction orders fell by 11.8% in Q2 compared with Q1. This is a drop of £1,232 billion.
This isn't a short-term issue. The pressure on pipelines will be felt in the months ahead. Businesses that act now, by building visibility and credibility, will be in a better position.
Consistency matters. Regular marketing activity during quieter periods, as well as busy times, keeps you on tender lists and generates enquiries.
When clients are more selective, they want confidence that you’ll deliver their project effectively and to the standard promised. That's where strategic marketing comes in.
